Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Learning and Engagement, the Tour Programs Manager develops a suite of docent-led, community-led, and self-guided tours for the Honolulu Museum of Arts visitors. In close collaboration with the Education and Community Programs Manager, the Tour Programs Manager trains, evaluates, and schedules a core group of 50-60 active volunteer docents to ensure tours are accessible, interesting, and relevant to museum audiences. They also work with community members and artists to co-create tours that engage visitors with narratives beyond the museum's walls.

The Tour Programs Manager is a key member of HoMA's interpretive team comprised of the Education and Community Programs Manager, Interpretive Resources Manager, Studio Programs Manager, and HoMA's curators. Together, they are charged with developing a cohesive and complementary suite of interpretive programs and resources that support the vision and values of HoMA.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education, Museum Studies, Art History, or related field and two to five years of comprehensive related experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of teaching and developing curriculum.
  • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of inquiry-based pedagogical theory and technique, as well as a strong art historical expertise.
  • Exceptional ability to manage, lead, and build the capabilities of a driven, bright team of volunteers.
  • Ability to create communities and a sense of belonging.
  • Strong communication, both written and verbal, and organizational skills.
  • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
  • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.

Development of Tour Content:

  • Works closely with the Associate Director of Learning and Engagement to develop interpretive strategy and pedagogy for museum tours and conceptualize the long-term vision for growth of tour programming.
  • Develops and writes new content for self-guided and docent-led tours, geared towards a variety of audiences, on a quarterly rotation.
  • Collaborates with community members and artists to co-create community/artist-led tours.
  • Works closely with HoMA's interpretive team to develop content that is aligned and complementary across all interpretive activities and resources.

Docent Training and Evaluation:

  • Works with the Education and Community Programs Manager to provide continuing education for docents in current pedagogical approaches.
  • Evaluates, conducts regular observations, and provides constructive feedback to docents.
  • Creates training guides for new docent-led tours and trains docents on their knowledge and ability to converse about the museum's collection and exhibitions and ensure a high level of efficacy and fidelity in all museum tours.
  • Works with the Curatorial department on all new exhibitions to coordinate continuous Curatorial training for docents and generate training guides and supplemental resources to provide key messages.
  • Oversees program evaluation and keeps an account of visitor survey results.

New Docent Training:

  • Works with the Education and Community Programs Manager to recruit for, coordinate, conduct, and lead a 6-month training program for new docent intake when needed.
  • Maintains and updates the new docent training handbook for relevancy and that it reflects current museum practices.
  • Determines the need and when to train for a new docent cohort.

Docent Management and Scheduling:

  • Works closely with the Education and Community Programs Manager in scheduling docents, tours, and docent training.
  • Acts as liaison between Docents and Learning and Engagement staff and other HoMA Departments.
  • Works closely with the docent liaisons to coordinate monthly docent meetings and events and determines their role and administrative responsibilities.

Program Administration:

  • Works with Communications, Design, and Visitor Engagement departments to develop program promotion in print and online as well as ensuring the website is kept up to date.
  • With Security, Facilities, and Visitor Engagement departments, coordinates all administrative, operational, interdepartmental, and day-to-day logistics for tour programs.
  • Tracks and reports attendance data and works closely with the HR Coordinator in reporting docent hours.
  • Assists the Associate Director of Learning and Engagement with grant writing and reporting and monitoring of program budgets.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through respectful communication and cooperation with others at all times, continuous training, and modeling inclusive behaviors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation:

The Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $55,000 per year and the maximum salary is $65,000 per year. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
