ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL I
The Architectural Associate Principal I develops existing client relationships and works to establish new clients; contributes to important company initiatives and strategic planning; manages and develops a team; and leads change throughout the company.
Providing oversight and project management to our agile teams, your core strengths include distributing resources; managing and estimating budgets; supervising team members; and establishing, maintaining and fostering relationships with key clients and stakeholders. Your expertise encompasses design for moderately sized and complex projects, and your technical skill enables you to efficiently oversee a multitude of assignments concurrently.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
- A Bachelor’s or advanced degree in your discipline from an accredited institution and have at least twelve (12) years of related work experience with at least five (5) in a Project Manager role – or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Professional Licensure (RA)
- Strong skills in client management, client development and a documented history of growing/leading a practice.
- Strong business skills specifically handling budgets, staff, and operational issues.
- Strong ability to analyze the marketplace and strategically position CPL.
- You’re a proactive communicator with exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Highly accountable, you approach every engagement with a positive attitude and an eagerness to exceed client expectations.
- You are a strategic thinker, having worked to identify thoughtful solutions to complicated design problems.
- You have a thorough understanding of current trends and issues facing the healthcare architectural industry.
- You thrive in a collaborative, team-based and entrepreneurial environment.
- An in-depth understanding of healthcare design and operations in both acute care and outpatient settings.
- You are willing and able to travel regionally and nationally (as necessary) in support of firm and practice goals.
- In-depth knowledge of construction processes and regulatory compliance with local and state AHJ’s.
CORE DUTIES
- Establish, nurture, and maintain relationships with clients.
- Drive the business development programs consistent with CPL's Strategic Plan.
- Coordinate marketing efforts within practice area, geography and with other Principals in conceiving and implementing collaborative business development plans.
- Utilize financial tracking and measurement tools that provide indicators of business health.
- Attend, participate in and lead client visioning sessions.
- Develop project scopes and objectives and coordinate all efforts – administrative and technical – to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective execution of assigned projects.
- Advocate for sustainable approaches to design solutions.
- Provide management of internal finances, which include billing, invoice generation and asset/resource allocation.
- Ensure appropriate resources are allocated throughout the organization to deliver a high-quality client experience.
SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS
- Engage and foster the growth of CPL team members: provide encouragement and regular feedback; and serve as a mentor/example for all levels of the team.
- Manage/oversee career conversations with your team on an established schedule (annual career conversations, regular check-ins, and the development of career plans for each team member).
- Develop future leaders within the organization (train your replacement).
- Engage, motivate, and lead internal and external stakeholders to develop strategies and plans to move the organization in the desired direction.
- Influence people through effective communication.
- Promote justice, diversity, and fairness in the organization.
- Create, maintain, and nurture external client relationships.
- Coordinate marketing efforts within your practice area, geography, and among other leaders including networking, conferences, research, relationships, opportunities, pursuits (proposals), generation of revenue, and business development action plan.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the business and CPL’s Value Proposition.
- Responsible for managing $1 million in fees minimum with a personal portfolio of clients that bring in $500,000 in fees at minimum at the agreed upon practice multiplier.

The rate for this position generally ranges between $109K - 157K annually. This range is a good faith estimate provided pursuant to the New York Pay Transparency Law. It is based on what a successful New York applicant might be paid and assumes that the successful candidate will be in New York or perform the position from New York. Actual pay rates may vary from the range, as permitted by New York Equal Pay Transparency Law.
