Job Summary:
Brady is seeking a motivated mid-level attorney to join our policy team, primarily focusing on legislation, policy analysis, research, and writing projects related to our work to prevent gun violence in America. This will include opportunities to work on local, state and federal policies.

This is a full-time position which can be remote or based in Washington DC. Travel will be required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Support Brady’s legislative and regulatory work through activities such as:
  • Drafting local, state, and federal legislation. Analyzing proposed and existing legislation, including constitutionality and congruence with Brady’s overall policy strategy. Recommending organizational positions on particular bills, ordinances or executive actions.
  • Developing expertise on relevant state and federal legislative landscape and relevant jurisprudence.
  • Identifying, researching, and describing opportunities for new or different legislative approaches, executive and regulatory actions, or improvement in implementation aimed at preventing gun violence.
  • Serving as a legal and subject matter expert for internal Brady staff as well as external stakeholders such as legislators, legislative staff, grassroots, and coalition members.
  • Drafting and delivering written and oral testimony and public comments in support or in opposition to policies or legislation.
  • Drafting content, including internal and external memos, fact sheets, white papers, letters of support, research reports on relevant policies, and materials for Brady partners and supporters.
  • Collaborate with Brady team members from across the organization, as well as with our grassroots, Gun Violence Prevention partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Public facing communications including potential panels, webinars, and digital, radio, and television media inquiries about firearm-related laws, legislation, and policies.
  • Other duties that may be assigned.
  • The position’s specific job responsibilities will vary according to project deadlines and the fast-moving pace of state legislatures, Congress, and Brady’s overall work.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • J.D., admitted to a state or District of Columbia bar
  • At least 5 years of legal experience, ideally 2 years of which include full or part-time experience analyzing bills and working with legislators or policy advocates on legislation or regulations
  • Familiarity with the legislative process
  • Strong ability to understand and translate legislative text and policy proposals for legal, political, and lay audiences
  • Exceptional attention to detail, writing, and editing skills
  • Ability to pivot quickly on tasks or issues as needs arise
  • Willingness to travel frequently, sometimes with short notice
  • Be self-motivated, creative, dependable, and accountable
  • Have an interest in gun violence prevention and in advocating on behalf of gun violence reduction and prevention
  • Strong presentation and public-speaking skills
  • Strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Capacity and willingness to speak to the media, including phone, print, and on-camera interviews with reporters
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team and as part of a broader coalition
  • A commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism, especially as it relates to policy and legislation
  • This may include some evening or weekend work on occasion as we are at the mercy of state legislatures and Congress, although the team works hard to limit as much as possible
