J ob Overview
The Shelter Housing Specialist II supports individuals and families residing in the YWCA's domestic violence shelter by helping them secure stable housing. This role involves offering comprehensive housing navigation services such as housing searches, application support, landlord mediation, tenant rights education, and participation in the Coordinated Entry system.
Reports to: Director of Shelter, Advocacy, and DV Education.
FLSA Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt.
Salary: $24-$26 Per Hour.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and streamline the Coordinated Entry process for clients, ensuring timely and efficient housing placement.
  • Educate clients on their tenant rights and responsibilities, including understanding lease agreements, resolving disputes, and preventing eviction.
  • Proactively identify housing options that meet clients' needs, preferences, and eligibility criteria.
  • Assist clients in completing housing applications, preparing necessary documentation, overcoming obstacles during the process, and driving them to housing or rental appointments in the agency van when needed.
  • Negotiate lease terms with landlords on behalf of clients and address any concerns that may arise.
  • Stay informed about local social services, rental procedures, tenant rights, and maintain up-to-date rental listings in the Capital District.
  • Keep detailed and accurate client case records, tracking progress and documenting interactions, and ensure client information is entered accurately into the YWCA database.
  • Work closely with staff and community partners to coordinate housing solutions and provide comprehensive holistic support for shelter residents.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs.
  • Complete SOAR case management training within six months of hire and provide SOAR case management services to eligible clients.
  • Occasionally assist with covering the Shelter Hotline or Front Desk reception when needed.
  • Participate in YWCA staff meetings, case management meetings, and relevant training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Preferred experience working with individuals affected by domestic violence or trauma.
  • Knowledge and application of trauma-informed care principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet research, and database management.
  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
Education and Experience:
  • Associate degree required, Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field preferred.
  • 4-6+ years of experience in domestic violence, sexual assault, crisis intervention, human services, social services, or criminal justice fields.
  • SOAR case management training must be completed within six months of employment.
Additional Information/Requirements:
  • This is a 3-year contract position, with a high possibility of renewal.
  • Criminal background check, including SCR/SEL/Fingerprinting
  • Clean NYS Driver's License and ability to drive non-commercial van.
  • New York state Driving abstract and completion of Defensive Driving course.
