Zingerman's is hiring a Staff Accountant
Zingerman's Community of Businesses is an organization managed under the philosophy of Open Book Management . This means that we encourage all of our staff to understand the key financial numbers and we share the information lavishly. The main responsibility of a Zingerman's Staff Accountant is to support the Zingerman's Community of Businesses (ZCoB) with daily/weekly/monthly accounting tasks, cash handling, monthly financial reports/reviews, analytics and historical context surrounding annual planning and quarterly forecasting, teaching financial literacy to our staff, and more.
This position is typically 40-45 hours per week at an annual salary of $70,000 - $75,000, depending on experience. The position has some flexibility in work hours and days, but a typical schedule would be 8:30am-4:30pm or 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. The position reports directly to Zingerman's Restaurant Accounting Manager and will work closely with the Managing Partners and leadership teams of their supported businesses.

- Able to perform accounting functions for the businesses including invoicing, processing vendor payments, billing, active management of A/R and A/P, payroll processing, intercompany transactions, assisting with physical inventory and related valuation as needed, reconciliations, journal entries, and assist with month-end closing activities and financial reporting as necessary
- Supervises one part-time accounting assistant
- Coordinates purchasing information and A/R information with Delicatessen cashiers and catering staff, monitors adherence with cash handling processes
- Produces financial reports, both internal and external, and analytical commentary within established timeframes
- Manages bank accounts and related activity including online checking, account transfers, preparation of bank deposits, and overall cash handling
- Reconciles daily cash receipts with multiple point of sale (POS) systems to ensure proper revenue recognition
- Prepares special financial analyses as requested
- Assists with annual planning and forecasting as deemed necessary
- Provides great service to vendors, customers, and staff seeking financial information
- Monitors shared email account, answering questions and providing information as requested
- Works proactively to prevent problems and encourages cooperation toward achieving organizational goals
- Active, on-site presence in the administrative office and develops an understanding of how administration supports business operations
- Attends, participates, provides information and sometimes leads weekly meetings ("huddles") with staff and attends manager and leadership meetings
- Attends huddles with Zingerman's Great Finance Group and complies with deadlines and procedures established by the group
- Completes Training Passports within the stated timeframes and continues to live by Zingerman's Guiding Principles
- Actively supports open-book management techniques and an informed finance culture throughout the business, collaborating with other Zingerman's businesses and accountants to promote common practices and standards whenever possible
- Establishes and maintains effective communication and positive working relationships throughout the Zingerman's Community of Businesses (ZCoB)
- Supports principles of Lean Management and Continuous Improvement
- Creates maintains and improves standard operating procedures (SOP's) for related work
- Able to ascend/descend between multiple levels of the Deli building
- Able to work at a desk, standing or sitting for long periods of time
- BA/BS in accounting or finance or related field
- 3-5 or more years of relevant professional experience typical of a full charge accountant
- Restaurant and retail experience a plus (or similar industry with high transactional volumes)
- Experience with Sage 50 (formerly Peachtree) a plus
- Experience with continuous improvement and/or Lean concepts a plus
- Excellent planning and organization skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Supervisory experience a plus
- Ability to analyze financial data and related business operations
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Proficiency in Google Suites and Microsoft Excel in a Mac OS operating environment
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple, high-volume email inboxes
- Ability to add financial rigor to dynamic environments
- Flexible approach to problem-solving with a strong work ethic (self-motivated)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- High level of personal energy and strong interpersonal skills
- Quick learner who can work independently and also as part of a team
- Discreetly handle confidential information
