Job Requirements / Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist the Accounts Payable Manager and Financial Reporting Manager in preparing month-end financial statements in the required format, reflective of the general ledger, and within the required time frames.
  • Review gifts for proper classification and recognition, and reconcile monthly against invoices, reports, bank statements, and external databases.
  • Assist in managing restricted grants, ensuring proper recording, monitoring, and reporting to project managers and donors.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and prepare necessary journal entries using council-defined formats.
  • Record monthly retail sales, perform inventory analysis, and prepare necessary journal entries.
  • Record membership revenue and reconcile monthly.
  • Perform financial analysis on general ledger accounts, record appropriate transactions, and prepare and enter necessary journal entries as requested.
  • Prepare reports for State & County agencies, such as sales tax.
  • Ensure routine correspondence and questions are handled accurately, courteously and promptly.
  • Work both individually and on cross functional teams or staff committees to improve financial processes.
  • Assist with coordination and preparation of schedules for the financial statement audit and the 990-tax filing.
  • Support other Finance team members as needed.

Skills Required

  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and current accounting rules and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in the most current versions of Windows and Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ability to use the Internet.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including conflict resolution.
  • Commitment to diversity and ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to assess materials and information presented verbally and visually.
  • Ability to bend, to pull open lateral file drawers and to lift a minimum of 25 lbs. unaided.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Remote Work and Office Expectations

  • Work in the office in Alameda twice a week.

Essential Qualifications

  • A. or B.S. in Accounting or Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting, or acceptable substitute.
  • Minimum one year staff accounting/financial analysis experience.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and current accounting rules and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in the most current versions of Windows and Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ability to use the Internet.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including conflict resolution.
  • Commitment to diversity and ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to assess materials and information presented verbally and visually.
  • Skilled using various accounting software and experience in troubleshooting common accounting program problems.
  • Personal integrity when working with personal and sensitive financial information.

Desired Qualifications

  • Nonprofit accounting experience.
  • MIP Fund Accounting Software experience highly desirable.

Language Stipend

For bilingual employees, a language stipend based on proficiency in verbal and written communication is available, determined by demonstrated skills in one or both areas.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. (boxes, materials, equipment).
  • Possess physical endurance including prolonged standing, bending, stooping and stretching.
