Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Purchasing Manager, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating and procuring pharmaceuticals, supplies, and services required by the Department of Pharmacy and UCSF Health. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Purchasing pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances, and pharmacy-related supplies and equipment.
  2. Researching and negotiating pharmaceutical pricing contracts.
  3. Monitoring contract compliance and optimizing contract utilization.
  4. Mitigating drug and pharmacy-related supply shortages and recalls.
  5. Ensuring supply-chain regulatory compliance and security.
  6. Ensuring regulatory compliance with controlled-substance procurement.
  7. Obtaining quotes for capital purchases, equipment, and supplies.

The major goals for this position and the department include identifying and executing cost-saving opportunities and minimizing risk for UCSF related to procurement, contracting, and supply chain security. The incumbent must be highly skilled in performing analysis using various tools and works independently and proactively with decision-making responsibility under the general direction of Pharmacy Leadership. Performance is measured in terms of meeting specific goals and objectives.

The incumbent is also responsible for coordinating and executing the procurement of pharmaceutical drugs, supplies, and services required by inpatient and outpatient areas of UCSF Health. They use advanced professional concepts to work on complex procurement assignments where analysis of situations or data requires a review of multiple purchasing options. The incumbent has the authority to make purchases within broadly defined dollar limits and exercises judgment to determine the most effective methodology to acquire pharmaceuticals and pharmacy-related supplies. Normally, they receive little instruction on day-to-day work, with general direction provided on purchasing assignments that are more complex or unique in nature. They use skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues for both internal and external departmental contacts.
