About the Program and Position: Our Transitional Foster Care Program for Unaccompanied Children overseen by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), ensures the well-being and safety of unaccompanied children (ages 0-17) who cross the US Southern border without an adult. Unlike traditional congregate care settings, our approach involves placing unaccompanied children in foster homes while diligently searching for and assessing potential sponsors identified in the US. During their stay with us, we provide medical care, case management, engaging life skills classes, and essential mental health services. The Learning Center Principal is responsible for the overall operation and management of the Learning Center. Other responsibilities include supervising and conducting formal evaluations of all Learning Center employees and coordinating the scheduling of children, staff, and curriculum. How you get to use your skills…Work collaboratively with the VP of UC TFC to ensure daily efficient operational management of the Learning Center.Provide general supervision and direction to all Learning Center professional and support staffResponsible for the formal evaluation of all staff members, managing schedules, time off requests, and time sheets based on Learning Center needs.Ensure lesson plans are grade-appropriate and reflective of the NYS core curriculum with an emphasis on learning English (ESL).Work with the Training Department and assist with selection, assignment, orientation, and training and ongoing professional development of the Learning Center’s teamsEstablishes and maintains an orderly school environment conducive to teaching and learning, works with staff and parents to resolve problems and conflicts, and formulates corrective plans and policies including review of safety plans and Child Level Events.Serves as instructional leader within the Learning Center, ensuring proper placement of minors within the overall Learning Center program.Develop curriculum for life skills and skill-buildingMonitor and evaluate teachers within the learning room settingEnsure compliance with all ORR and New York State education requirements - such as child abuse, DASA, and school violence prevention.Collaborate with the VP of UC TFC to develop community relationships with neighboring businesses to assist in meeting the needs of the minors placed in our careCollaborate with VP of UC TFC for nutritional needs of minors including but not limited to menu planning and food prep certificationMonitor sites and tracking of minors’ whereabouts for safety as per ORR’s PSA and AWOL protocolsCollaborate with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.Meet and effectively communicate with other departments and parental groupsMaintain and monitor inventory of food, clothing, hygiene kits, and other materialsCollaborate with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.Advocate, nurture, and sustain a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional development under the guidance of the VP of UC TFCAct with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.Perform various administrative tasks assigned by the vice president such as completing internal and external forms, submitting reports as required, developing the master schedule, maintaining accurate records, and administering the labor agreements in a fair and consistent manner.Plan, attend and sometimes preside over meetings with staff and other administrators on various tasks, projects, and departmental/curriculum areas.Perform other duties as assigned by the VP of UC TFC or agency leadership.Schedule:ExemptRegular hours entail 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - FridayMust be flexible to meet program needsEvenings and weekends may be requiredExperience and Skills:Master’s degree in Education required. Proper administrative certification is preferred.Additional coursework beyond Master’s is desirableProper state certification as School Building Leader (SBL) preferred5 years teaching/administrative experience3 years preferred in administrative experience as assistant principalFamiliarity with ACS, OCFS, OPWDD, OMH, and other relevant municipal and state agencies preferredStrong skills in Microsoft Office & Google WorkspaceExcellent communication and organizational skillsProven experience accelerating measurable student learning in urban schools strongly preferredDemonstrate conceptual understanding of developmentally appropriate behavior for children/adolescents in the home, school, and communityAbility to work well with people from many cultures including recent immigrants, non-English speakers, and LGBTQ childrenBi-lingual - English-Spanish preferred. All agency documents and records are in English, so English writing proficiency is required. The position itself will be surrounded by many Spanish-speaking children.
