We are currently seeking a Tax Manager to join the company’s Corporate Accounting function, under the Tax Operations Team. The Tax Operations Team oversees the tax aspects of the Company’s real estate transactions, investment fund structure, and joint ventures. This position, reporting to the Director of Tax, is responsible for overseeing the income and indirect tax compliance functions for the lending, servicing, and affordable housing development business segments. The Tax Manager will be involved with tax reporting, planning, and audit defense. This opportunity will be based in corporate headquarters in New York City.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Compliance – Partner with external providers to optimize the tax data collection process and to manage the Company’s tax filing footprint through nexus studies. Review tax deliverables for partnerships, S-corporations, C-corporations, trusts, and non-profit organizations. Prepare sales and use, gross receipts/earnings, personal property, business license, and various local indirect tax filings.
- Financial Reporting – Evaluate the reporting of tax positions and transactions in the Company’s financial statement tax disclosures. Participate in the Company’s accounting for income taxes process under ASC 740, including current and deferred tax computations, evaluation for uncertain tax positions, and projection of an effective tax rate. Collaborate with controller and financial planning and analysis stakeholders to prepare tax footnotes and the Company’s interim period and annual board materials.
- Planning – Identify, research, and execute tax planning opportunities and minimize tax liabilities and risks. Monitor the latest tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements. Provide tax cash forecasts and recommendations on capital efficiency.
- Tax Audits and Controversies – Manage the Company’s tax audits with the IRS and state authorities. Present filing positions and negotiate favorable resolutions of deficiencies. Correspond with federal, state, and local taxing authorities in response to notices and inquiries. Work on sales and use reverse audits to recover vendor-charged taxes.
- Enterprise Transactions/Projects – Identify and provide guidance on tax risks and opportunities for ongoing business activities, acquisitions/dispositions, and joint venture operating agreements, with an emphasis on compliance with tax statutory requirements. Collaborate with technology, accounting, and procurement stakeholders to build a tax-efficient ERP/CRM infrastructure.
Experience, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- CPA and/or master’s degree in tax/accounting.
- 5+ years of tax experience in real estate, asset management, or financial service industry.
- Expertise in partnership and S-corporation taxation.
- Experience with tax reporting under ASC 740.
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
- Proficient with MS Excel, MS Word, ERP/CRM systems integration, and tax reporting and compliance software.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and good judgment.
- Strong leadership abilities and experience in managing remote teams and external providers.

Greystone offers a competitive base salary and bonus. The base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $140,000/year. The specific compensation that will be offered is based on an understanding of the hired candidates' qualifications at the time of hire. Employees are eligible for a discretionary bonus based on employee work performance reviewed during the annual review process.
