The Recruitment Director will be responsible for developing and executing a coordinated effort to recruit future public defenders. Although the primary duty is to recruit future public defenders, the Recruitment Director will also develop and work with leadership to implement appropriate strategies to increase employee retention. This position will directly report to the First Assistant and Chief Public Defender and will proactively consult with other leadership members and Human Resources on recruitment, hiring, and retention strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with leadership to understand the office's hiring needs, and develop and execute strategies to meet recruitment and hiring goals.
- Ensure all hiring and recruitment practices comply with county policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with law schools and coordinate, oversee, and/or participate in law school recruitment and hiring events.
- Participate in legal and law school events, including panel discussions and conferences.
- Conduct outreach to bar associations and other professional organizations to engage with and recruit top talent.
- Develop and implement recruitment strategies for non-attorney staff.
- Stay current on trends in public defense recruitment and retention.
- Develop and implement employee engagement and retention strategies.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctorate Degree.
- At least five (5) years experience as a public defender.
Licensure:
- Currently licensed to practice law in Texas.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Good written and oral communications skills.
- Effective organizational and time management skills.

The Recruitment Director should have at least 5 years of experience as a public defender and must be enthusiastic about promoting public defense as a career.
Experience with recruitment and hiring in the legal profession is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of the culture of Harris County and the Public Defenders Office is also preferred, but not required.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
- Regular Full-time
- Monday - Friday
- Plus weekends as needed.
- Hours will be discussed during departmental interview.
- Sitting, walking, standing, driving, lifting (15 lbs.). Some travel may be required.
