Roof Above is NC's most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above's services and programs reach over 1,200 individuals every day across seven campuses in Charlotte (up to 14 campuses in COVID). Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men's Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Vice President of Shelter Services holds a pivotal leadership role within Roof Above, directly influencing the organization's ability to meet the needs of those we serve. This position not only oversees essential shelter programs including North Tryon, Howard Levine, and Lucille Giles but also acts as a driving force behind our commitment to quality care, effective management, and long-term impact.
This VP of Shelter Services is expected to set a high standard of leadership, embodying our mission of compassion and our dedication to a "Housing First" approach. They will be instrumental in shaping the strategic direction of the shelter programs, ensuring we continue to prioritize the dignity and well-being of every person who walks through our doors.
In addition to managing clinical operations, financial oversight, and regulatory compliance, the Vice President will serve as a bridge between internal teams and external partners. This role calls for someone who can confidently represent Roof Above in the community, advocate for those experiencing homelessness, and collaborate with stakeholders to strengthen our position as a trusted leader in the field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensures a high standard of service delivery, with the overall goal of helping each neighbor successfully engage with supportive services and navigate the housing process.
- Provide clinical direction and leadership to program leaders, utilizing a harm reduction approach and evidence-based practices.
- Conduct weekly supervision to program directors.
- Facilitate regular Shelter Leadership team meetings.
- Ensure program compliance with grants, contracts, and all Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS) requirements, completing relevant reports in an accurate and timely manner.
- Work with community partners, including the Continuum of Care, Homeless Service Network, Mecklenburg County, and other homeless services agencies to coordinate community-wide response to homelessness.
- Develop community resources and liaise with collateral providers to enhance wrap-around services available to neighbors.
- Assure continuing training to staff.
- Manage fiscal resources and maintain program records in accordance with a variety of funding & regulatory requirements.
- Work with Chief Program Officer and Vice Presidents of Scatter Site, Engagement, and Single Site to ensure coordination of services and team-building activities to unite staff.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Masters degree in human services field; Licensure in professional field or extensive work experience strongly preferred.
- Substantial previous experience working with individuals living with mental illness, substance use disorder, or dual-diagnosis.
- Prior experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness; prior experience within shelter systems is a plus.
- Minimum of 8 years supervisory experience.
- Proficiency managing government grants and contracts.
- Superior oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
- Computer proficiency; Experience with ServicePoint a plus.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be certified in CPR and First Aid or willingness and ability to complete certification within 60 days of hire.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Individuals must be able to work with limited supervision, embrace a fast-paced environment, and be comfortable de-escalating behaviors with diverse individuals including persons with mental illness and substance use issues.
