Position Title: Library Media Assistant
Pay Grade: 7 Period of Employment: 10 months

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Library Media Specialist, Building Administrators
General Responsibilities : Provides library and media services that meet the needs of students and faculty, learns and applies new technological skills that improve library and media services.
Essential Duties:

  • Assists with opening the library at the start of school year, enters data on students and staff into library operations system.
  • Assists in closing the library at the end of the school year, takes inventory of all materials.
  • Provides care and supervision of the students at all times.
  • Checks materials in and out for students and staff using a computerized library circulation system.
  • Issues notices/reminders/lists to students and teachers of checked out materials and send correspondence to parents regarding the school's policy on overdue items.
  • Processes new materials, shelves books and other library materials, rearranges shelves as necessary.
  • Supervises the library media center and the student use of the library in the absence of the library media specialist.
  • Maintains organization and neatness of the library.
  • Uses the tenants of "Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS)" to ensure students are safe, respectful, and responsible.
  • Makes minor repairs to damaged library materials, print and non-print material.
  • Works in partnership with the bookkeeper by utilizing effective cash handling skills to collect fines and lost book funds; processes money collected through fundraisers and book fairs.
  • Assists in training and organizing the work of library volunteers.
  • Supports and assists the library media specialist in maintaining media equipment and computer systems.
  • Assists with circulation and maintenance records of the school's audiovisual equipment, including media preparation equipment, such as a laminator and copy machines, poster maker, printers; performs minor repairs and routine maintenance on equipment, replaces printer cartridges and paper; submits work orders for repairs.
  • Provides clerical support to the library media specialist.
  • Assists the library media specialist with special events and projects such as book fairs, volunteer receptions, and author visits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Able to work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators and provide excellent customer service.
  • Computer and office equipment skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Able to perform clerical tasks such as filing, schedule management, e-mailing, phone management, producing business correspondence and editing.
  • Working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification System and other library/media systems.
  • Able to create and maintain library reports and records.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting procedures.
  • Able to multitask.
  • Able to supervise students in individual and group settings.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Initiative to research and learn new technologies.
  • Able to initiate tasks and work independently.
  • Knowledge of inventory procedures.
  • Able to prioritize.
  • Able to lift approximately 25 lbs., and to shelve materials up to six feet and as low as floor level.
  • Serve as role model.
Requisite Education and Experience:
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must possess a minimum of 60 college credit hours; or an Associate's degree or higher; or possess a passing score on the Para Pro assessment.
  • Should possess some clerical experience, especially in a school environment.

Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
