The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Animal Care Specialist (Kennels) to support the Animal Care Division.

General Description: Performs a variety of animal control and care work in the kennels of the Animal Care and Adoption Division. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: No experience required.

Special Certifications and Licenses: None.

Preferences: Knowledge of general animal care/health principles and practices.

Additional Information: The Animal Care Specialist position is a safety-sensitive position. Candidates selected for employment will be subject to pre-employment verifications including a post-offer physical examination/drug test and clearance of the Department of Children and Families Affidavit of Good Moral Character.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Feeds and provides clean water for animals in order to maintain their health and general welfare.
  • Maintains the well-being of animals in the shelter; reunites pets and owners, avoids needless overcrowding at shelters, and prevents potential cross-contamination/spread of disease.
  • Cleans and disinfects dog runs and cat cages, feeds animals, scans and bands animals, and performs laundry duties.
  • Cleans other shelter areas housing or temporarily holding animals to ensure proper sanitation.
  • Interacts with dogs and cats to provide both mental and physical enrichment.
  • Interacts with the public in a positive and customer-centric manner.
  • Educates the public on Broward County animal ordinance-related issues.
  • Communicates the necessity of spaying/neutering pets and conducts outreach activities.
  • Assists with training volunteers and works alongside them in a positive manner.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Work Environment:

Physical Demands: Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting regularly, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force.

Unavoidable Hazards: Involves routine and frequent exposure to disease/pathogens, dog and cat allergens, potentially aggressive animals, and periods of mental stress.
