The rebuilding & rebirth of Detroit is happening now!Under general supervision, is in charge of the civil engineering design and preparation of plans and specifications for major municipal engineering projects.Examples of DutiesPlan and supervise the work of a moderately large group of subordinate engineers and drafting technicians engaged in performing fundamental civil engineering design and feasibility studies of alternate methods of solving specific civil engineering problems; and preparing detailed designs and plans, drawings, specifications, and estimates of costs for projects.Prepare plans and policies for carrying out work.Assign, review , and approve the work of subordinates.Instruct and advise workers on the more difficult phases of work.Design, select, and approve the major design features.Prepare the more important specifications.Investigate and analyze construction methods used.Examine plans, specifications, and estimates for completeness and conformity with accepted design practices, polices, and procedures.Prepare special studies and reports relative to matters such as alternate solutions and estimates of materials and costs.Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering .Five years of experience in the design and preparation of plans for large municipal projects including two years in a supervisory or team leadership capacity.EquivalencyEquivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.Licensing and CertificationsCurrent registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan.Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on requirements of the position.Supplemental InformationEvaluation PlanInterview: 70%Evaluation of Training, Experience & Personal Qualifications: 30%Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P: 100%Additional points may be awarded for:Veteran Points: 0 – 15 pointsDetroit Residency Credit: 15 pointsLRD: 07/25/2024Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of p rincipals and methods of civil engineering design and construction.Knowledge of e quipment and materials used in civil engineering projects.Knowledge of p roject costing, monitoring , and reporting techniques.Skill in a nalyzing problems relating to civil engineering design and construction.Skill in s upervising, prioritizing , and directing the work of others.Skill in r eading, understanding , and evaluating engineering plans and specifications.Skill in o ral and written communication.Skill in the u se of personal computers and common office and work related software.Skill in p reparing concise technical and non-technical reports.Ability to p lan and direct the activities of a moderately large group of subordinate engineers and draft technicians.Ability to e stimate costs and schedules for engineering projects.Ability to i nteract effectively with subordinates and peers with tact and diplomacy.Ability to d isplay initiative and resourcefulness in solving difficult and unusual engineering problems in connection with problems of civil engineering design.Physical DemandsThe employee generally engages in light to strenuous physical activity which may include operating machinery, motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and using tools for an extended period of time.
