Background: Vectrona is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Technical Writer to support The Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC PAC). This role will involve creating and managing documentation that enhances the understanding and usability of advanced naval technologies.
The ideal candidate for the NIWC Pacific Technical Award Writer position should possess strong writing and editing skills, a solid understanding of technical concepts in computer science and engineering, and the ability to translate complex information into clear and concise language. Additionally, they should demonstrate excellent attention to detail and have experience crafting compelling narratives that effectively highlight achievements and their impact.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Develop, Write, and Edit Award Nominations: Craft clear, concise, and compelling technical award nominations for individual and team achievements, adhering to submission guidelines and ensuring accuracy and professionalism.
- Collaborate with Stakeholders: Engage with nominators, nominees, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather relevant biographical and technical information for award submissions, ensuring clarity and completeness.
- Organize and Manage Award Submissions: Track and manage multiple award nominations simultaneously, including monitoring deadlines, submission schedules, and maintaining accurate records of awards submitted, in progress, and received.
- Maintain Documentation: Regularly update and maintain documentation related to the award nomination process, ensuring compliance with NIWC Pacific and Department of Defense (DoD) standards and policies.
- Create Supporting Materials: Design and incorporate appropriate illustrative materials, such as charts, diagrams, and graphics, to enhance the effectiveness of award nominations and related documentation.
- Ensure Compliance and Accuracy: Review and ensure all award submissions meet required formats, deadlines, and Navy/DoD guidelines, including adherence to security requirements where applicable.
- Support Stakeholder Training: Provide training to supervisors and staff as needed on effective award nomination writing practices, and develop strategic templates and briefs to streamline the award writing process.
- Attend Meetings and Provide Updates: Participate in weekly meetings and deliver status updates on ongoing award nominations and technical documentation projects. Maintain consistent communication with leadership regarding the progress of submissions.
- Assist in Continuous Improvement: Contribute to process improvements by reviewing and refining award writing strategies, documentation standards, and templates to ensure the highest level of professionalism and technical accuracy.
Preferred Education/Degree:
- A Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is required. A BS in a technical field, such as engineering or computer science, along with a minimum of 2 years of technical writing experience is preferred. Alternatively, a BS or BA in English or another writing-related field, along with at least 2 years of technical writing experience, is acceptable.
Preferred Experience, Skills, and Qualifications:
- Technical Writing Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in technical writing, with a focus on writing for defense, technology, or engineering sectors. Prior experience with Navy or DoD award submissions is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with Naval Operations: Knowledge of naval operations, command structures, and information warfare technologies is highly desirable, as it aids in understanding the context of technical award nominations.
- Proficiency in Writing and Document Tools: Expertise in Microsoft Word and Excel for drafting and manipulating technical documents. Familiarity with other tools such as MadCap Flare or Adobe FrameMaker is beneficial but not required.
- Analytical and Research Skills: Strong ability to understand complex technical concepts in computer science and engineering, and translate them into clear, concise, and compelling narratives for award submissions.
- Excellent Communication Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail in technical documentation and award writing.
- Independence and Teamwork: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, engaging with SMEs and stakeholders to gather necessary information and complete submissions in a fast-paced environment.
- Version Control and Document Management: Experience with document management practices and version control systems is an advantage, ensuring consistent and organized document handling.
- DoD Documentation Knowledge: Familiarity with Department of Defense (DoD) documentation standards and practices, as well as knowledge of Navy directives, to ensure compliance with submission guidelines.
- Agile Methodologies: Basic understanding of agile project management principles, ensuring timely completion of multiple award submissions while maintaining flexibility and adaptability.
- Storytelling and Narrative Skills: Demonstrated skill in crafting compelling narratives that effectively highlight technical achievements and their impact, while adhering to the award submission guidelines and formats.
