Job Summary:
The Real Estate Accounting Manager serves a critical role within the Accounting/Finance department and is responsible for the management of the accounting staff and oversight of all accounting related to real estate operations. The individual will be responsible for regular and ad-hoc financial reporting and analysis, identifying and mitigating risks, and building strong partnerships across Accounting/Finance and the Operations Team. In addition, this role will be responsible for streamlining and automating activities throughout the real estate accounting process to increase productivity, efficiency and cross-departmental collaboration.
Required Experience and Capabilities:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, Finance or related field. (CPA designation is a positive)
  • 10 years of accounting experience, including at least two years in a management role.
  • Hands on experience with Yardi as the software platform for the financial reporting and operations of commercial real estate properties.
  • Working knowledge of commercial leases and experience performing NNN year-end reconciliations in Yardi.
  • MS Office / Microsoft Excel advanced skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to articulate a clear point of view on technical matters in clear, concise, and meaningful communications for various levels of the organization.
  • Highly motivated, participative, and collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
  • This position will report jointly to the CFO and Head of Finance.
  • Oversee 7 accounting staff who are engaged in financial management and reporting for a privately owned portfolio of 65+ commercial properties totaling approximately 15M square feet.
  • In addition to managing the accounting staff, this person will also personally handle the accounting for a few properties in order to keep their Yardi skills sharp and identify organizational roadblocks/operational issues.
  • Forecast cash flows for the portfolio of properties.
  • Assist Asset and Facilities Managers with miscellaneous tenant relations issues.
  • Develop and maintain cross-departmental partnerships, while presenting solutions to complex issues as they arise and recommending process/ system improvements.
  • Develop, coordinate, and enforce systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
  • Lead the accounting team through the design and adoption of standard operating procedures and best practices within the Real Estate domain.
  • Drive for continuous business/process improvement and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Finance and CFO to evolve the accounting services to better meet the holistic needs of the business today and into the future.
  • Provide reporting to support the Operations Team which includes: rent rolls, AR reports, variance reports, transaction details, etc.
  • Oversee Senior accountants whose primary responsibilities are:
  1. Monthly bank reconciliations and cash flow projections for assigned properties.
  2. Compile monthly financials for assigned properties.
  3. Set up all new leases and lease renewals for assigned properties.
  4. Complete year-end CAM reconciliations on a timely basis for assigned properties.
  5. Assist in establishing annual budgets for assigned properties.
  6. Prepare Excel sheet with all information for year-end tax return preparation
  7. On-board new property acquisitions from setting up property to performing loan details form.
  8. Lender Reimbursement Request Tracking.
  9. Financial reporting to lenders/loan servicers.
