THE POSITION
Under general supervision, provides experienced technical duties in support of library operations including advanced technical and specialized duties, opening and closing branch libraries, and may oversee library operations in the absence of the supervisor in addition to receiving and processing library materials; provides customer service to library patrons and staff; maintains library computer and other records of library resources as appropriate for the division assigned.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
The duties and responsibilities performed may be unique to the division served. For example, Senior Library Assistants to the Circulation desk may focus on the technical bookkeeping and administration of Library policies and procedures, while the Senior Library Assistants assigned to a Branch Library may focus more on providing community specific services and security for the library, and a Senior Library Assistant to the Literacy Services division may focus more on conducting assessments to determine eligibility for the tutoring program. The following is a general description of the primary duties and responsibilities:
  • Performs experienced technical, bookkeeping and administrative duties, using knowledge of Library policies and procedures and experience with computer technology systems; assists in the maintenance of specialized databases; compiles statistics and assists with preparing reports as required.
  • Coordinates the preparation and presentation of library programs and special events; assists with interactive programs and other community service projects; recommends additions to Library collection; assists with ordering materials and supplies.
  • Provides assistance and customer services in a courteous and respectful manner; assists patrons in finding materials, performing research, and locating reference materials; conducts reference interviews to determine patron needs; demonstrates and explains computerized resources, including Internet searches; respond to telephone requests for information.
  • Provides customer service in selecting, borrowing and returning library materials; assists patrons within scope of training, and responds to requests within the scope of authority.
  • Maintain library in a clean and orderly condition; shelves all returned books, periodicals, media and materials according to standard procedures and the library classification system; shelves books and library materials in designated areas.
  • Oversees support tasks at opening and closing of the library, such as relocating shelving units and furnishings, and setting up displays and meeting rooms for specific applications and events.
  • Receives and processes library materials for the collection; applies barcodes, security strips, spine labels, genre labels, and bookplates; repairs library materials and equipment as needed.
  • Registers new patrons following established procedures; maintains patron library card records.
  • Collects late fees and fines and reconciles cash account.
  • Picks up and delivers books, materials, mail and supplies.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and City information.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Associate's degree in business or a closely related field.
AND
Two (2) years of experience in a Public Library system.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess a valid California driver's license and safe driving record.

The City pays 100% of the monthly premium for employees and eligible dependents. This benefit includes one eye exam, one pair of lenses and a one-year supply of contact lenses per year.
Dental Coverage Provided by UMR
The City pays 100% of the monthly premium for employees and eligible dependents. The maximum benefit per calendar year per covered person is $2,000. The lifetime maximum benefit for orthodontic expenses per covered person is $3,000.
Life Insurance
Every full-time employee is provided Term life insurance equal to his/her annual salary with a maximum of $150,000.
Short-Term Disability Standard Insurance
Full-time employees must be employed a minimum of 30 days prior to receiving short-term disability benefits. There is a 29-day waiting eligibility period, and the maximum allotted time period is 180 days.
Long-Term Disability Standard Insurance
Coverage begins when an employee's disability period exceeds the 180th day timeline under short-term disability. The maximum allotted time period is determined by age when the disability begins.
Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) Retirement Benefit
Effective July 1, 2013, NEW CalPERS employee members will commence paying an employee contribution of 6.75%. A new employee who is not a member of CalPERS or is a former CalPERS member who has been out of CalPERS for six (6) months or more will be eligible to enroll in the City's 2% @ 62 Defined Benefit Pension Plan.
Effective July 1, 2014 "Classic" CalPERS employee members will be eligible to enroll in the City's 2% @ 55 CalPERS Retirement formula and will contribute a 7% employee contribution towards CalPERS Defined Benefit Pension Plan.

Deferred Compensation
The City contributes $25 per pay period and shall match an employee's deferred compensation in an amount not to exceed 3% of the employee's gross salary contribution per pay period.

The City pays 100% of the monthly premium for employees and eligible household members. Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by calling (888) 293-6948. This free and confidential brief counseling and referral service is designed to help employees and their household members resolve personal matters that may impact their work or home life.
Easy Eight Trip Reduction Program
Employees are eligible to participate in the Easy Eight Trip Reduction Program. Employees who carpool eight (8) days in a month are eligible to receive $25 per month for ridesharing / carpooling.
