DESCRIPTIONDEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department embodies the university's tradition of excellence as a world-class leader in computer science and engineering education and research. Ranked in the top 20 nationwide, the department is dedicated to research, education and overall excellence.
CSE has approximately 75+ faculty FTE, 20+ professional researchers, 50+ staff in career/casual titles, 300+ tutors, and 175+ TAs. There are over 1,900 undergraduate students enrolled in 3 majors, with annual enrollments of 25,000+. The department has a graduate education program with over 1,000 students (~350 PhD students and over 900 Master's students).
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the general supervision of the Undergraduate Affairs Manager, the Undergraduate Advisor is responsible for a wide scope of functions supporting the undergraduate program in the Computer Science and Engineering Department. The incumbent's responsibilities include participating in the short- and long-term planning for the degree program and the curriculum, academic advising and career counseling, student outreach/recruitment, and assisting with undergraduate scheduling and enrollment management.
The Undergraduate Advisor is responsible for initiating resolutions on problematic petitions and forms and working closely with the Undergraduate Colleges, Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, University Extension, International Center, Registrar's Office, Student Business Services and other academic departments. The incumbent participates in the planning and implementation of student outreach and retention events, and the creation of informational materials including departmental web pages.

QUALIFICATIONS-
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Proven experience in effectively counseling college student population to assist them in meeting educational, academic, and career goals.
Interpersonal skills. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact professionally and effectively with a diverse population. Ability to interact with tact, patience and diplomacy in a variety of situations.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Ability to balance multiple, often conflicting, priorities with deadline constraints and numerous interruptions. Demonstrated ability to successfully follow multiple tasks through to completion. Excellent verbal communication skills. Ability to express verbally one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretations in a professional, concise, and courteous manner. Strong writing skills to independently compose correspondence, informational material, and web page content using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills.
Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn, interpret, and apply CSE and UC San Diego policies, procedures, rules and regulations related to undergraduate education, admissions, graduation, transfer, and enrollment.
Understanding of University rules and regulations.
Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking.
Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Demonstrated effective problem-solving skills; ability to identify complex situations and recommend solutions. Ability to work with minimal direction and negotiate conflicts.
Demonstrated strong organizational skills. The ability to gather and synthesize large amounts of complex data to generate reports and make recommendations.
Demonstrated ability to exercise independent initiative and sound judgment within general guidelines, with the acumen and sensitivity to identify those decisions and activities which require higher level approval, consultation, and/or group collaboration.
Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Demonstrated skill in using standard and specialized office computer technology (email, database systems, spreadsheets, word processing and internet), and a commitment to regularly update and maintain technology skills. Specifically, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps preferred.
Demonstrated ability to identify issues and information requiring confidentiality (student records, conduct, personnel, etc.), along with related University policies, and the ability to maintain that confidentiality.
Proven ability to work in a professional, respectful manner in accordance with the UC San Diego Principles of Community.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a highly computerized, high volume, team-oriented environment, exercising good judgment, creativity and initiative in performance of job responsibilities. Willingness to develop new skills and knowledge as required to continue to perform effectively.
Demonstrated record management experience. Proven skill in developing and maintaining accurate, organized records, files and filing systems.
Ability to provide effective training and work direction to student staff.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,800 - $91,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.77 - $43.58
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
