The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for a full-time, permanent Dental Assistant to join the Health Services team located at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, WA.
This dental assistant position functions as a member of the Health Services Division assigned to Health Services and is responsible for performing dental assistant duties for the DOC Dentist in a Mobile Dental Clinic for incarcerated individuals at correctional facilities throughout the state. The dental assistant is also responsible for adhering to the Department's policies, the WA State DOC Health Plan, and the DOC Dental Services' protocols and guidelines. In doing so, this position contributes to improvement in patient health, which contributes to a reduction in criminal recidivism
The Washington Corrections Center (WCC) is a state prison for men, with an operating capacity of 1,268 incarcerated individuals. WCC includes the Reception Center in which all individuals entering the Washington State Prison System must pass through to be permanently assigned to their long-term care facility.

Duties
Direct chairside assisting with the following dental procedures
  • Diagnostic
  • Preventive
  • Periodontics
  • Endodontics
  • Oral Surgery
  • Prosthetics
  • Operative Procedures
  • Perform duties as authorized by the operating dentist, in accordance with the WA State Laws(related WAC & RCW).
  • May be required to perform reversible procedures; (for example: apply and remove matrixbands and wedges; remove cement around restorations; apply fluoride varnish etc.).
  • Capture and accurately label digital radiographs (periapical, bitewing, panoramic, occlusal,etc.).
  • Apply and removes rubber dams.
  • Maintain the field of operation by skillful use of low and high-volume evacuator and three-wayair water syringe.
  • Clean and disinfect the operatories.• Count the instruments at the beginning and the end of each procedure before dismissing the patient.
  • Set up the treatment area for the planned procedure, consult with the dentist, hygienist or denturist concerning what is needed, ensure that all needed instruments and supplies are available on hand.
  • Read instructions and understand how to use the products/materials being used for dental procedures.• Be mindful of using supplies in excess. Be a good steward of WA State resources.
  • Be aware of and meet targeted patient treatment volume.
  • Educate the patient in health behaviors including oral hygiene.
  • Inform the patient of the necessary treatment, the right to decline, and the consequences of declining to have a condition treated.
  • Inform the patient of the DOC policy regarding access to dental services and WA State DOC Health Plan.
  • Counsel the patient on self-care measures. Gives patient pre-approved pre-op and post op instructions.
  • Research request and respond to Kites in a timely manner. Ensure that the Kite is referred to the dentist as appropriate.
Transport, setup, and maintain the Mobile Dental Clinic
  • Stocks, monitors, and maintains dental equipment, dental supplies, inventory, and logs
  • May be required to setup of the Mobile Dental Clinic upon arrival at the prison/work site to include leveling the clinic, deploying the stairs, extending the awning as necessary, connecting the vehicle to facility fresh water, plugging the vehicle into shore power, and operating the generator

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a certified Dental Assistant in the State of Washington. Must have an unblemished/unrestricted registration to practice dental assisting with WA State Department of Health.
  • Maintain current CPR certification and ensure that proof of current status is provided annually to facility clinical leadership.
  • Ability to successfully complete specialized training provided through Mission Mobile Medical related to operation and maintenance of the Mobile Dental Clinic within 6 months of hiring.
  • Must comply with health screening requirements by undergoing tuberculosis testing and other appropriate related procedures unless exempt by State.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years experience as a dental assistant.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience and/or education in working with medical/dental documents and using medical/dental terminology.
  • Experience providing dental services in a correctional environment or full-service community health clinic.
  • Knowledge in the areas of scheduling routine/special dental procedures and patient visits.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications and related technologies

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Holidays
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.
Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.
Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.
Sick Leave
Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.
Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Vacation (Annual Leave)
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.
Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.
Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.
Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.
Military Leave
Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.
Bereavement Leave
Most employees whose family member or household member dies, are entitled to three (3) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
