Job Requirements / Description

Principal Scientist, Mathematical and Biological Modeling Data Scientist

Zoetis is a global animal health company dedicated to nurturing our world and humankind by advancing care for animals. We strive to create an atmosphere where colleagues feel valued and supported, can give their best every day, and are proud of the company where they work. Building on 70+ years of experience, our scientists help pets live longer, healthier lives, and support healthier, more productive livestock. We are committed to discovering and developing solutions that span a continuum of care to predict, prevent, detect, and treat disease in animals while championing a more sustainable future and creating a healthier world for all.

As the leader in animal health, Zoetis is looking to recruit a Mathematical and Biological Modeling Data Scientist into its world-class Veterinary Medicine Research and Development organization (VMRD). The candidate will join the In Silico Research team within Automation & Data Sciences (ADS) to execute the development and implementation of various modeling and digital twin projects. This role will build upon ADS’s industry leading In Silico Research group and help define the next generation of therapeutic, vaccine, and/or diagnostic evaluation and testing methods at Zoetis.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in data science applications within the bio/pharmaceutical industry, with special emphasis on mathematical modeling, digital twin simulations, and domain transfer. The candidate will have experience implementing differential equation, machine learning and AI models for therapeutic development, comparing results between multiple data and testing domains, and implementing analytics for digital twin applications to provide accurate simulation. Example applications may include in silico drug screening, predictive modeling, bioprocessing simulation, and manufacturing. The candidate will work in a team setting and will share roles and responsibilities with other colleagues. The candidate should display strong communication skills with biologists, chemists, technicians, and data scientists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with teams throughout VMRD to understand and evaluate mathematical modeling and digital twin project opportunities.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness of different datasets and mathematical approaches for a given project.
  • Research and identify external digital twin technologies and methods to best incorporate them internally.
  • Evaluate accuracy and specificity of digital twin and mathematical modeling projects on internal data.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization, including other data scientists, therapeutic/vaccine project and functional teams, biologists, chemists, and our Zoetis Tech & Digital (ZTD) organization.

Required Experience/ Skills

  • PhD in mathematics, computational biology, biology, or chemistry with an emphasis in modeling, or a related field.
  • Experience in biology, computer science, and mathematical modeling.
  • Digital twin development or mathematical modeling and evaluation, specifically in biological, chemical, or related applications.
  • Implementation of machine learning and AI methods in biologically related projects.
  • Programming across multiple programming languages, e.g., Python, R, Julia, C/C++.

Additional Experience/ Skills

  • Cellular automata, agent-based modelling, finite-state machines, dynamical systems.
  • Graph theory, algorithms, and network analysis.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical research such as disease and therapeutic mechanism of action, delivery, or development.

Job Type

  • Full-time, remote, or on-site in Fort Collins, CO or Kalamazoo, MI.
  • Work hours adjusted to time zones between US Eastern to US Pacific time zones.

The following base pay range reflects the anticipated base pay for this position if a selected candidate were to be located in Colorado. Base pay may vary based on location and other factors.

Base Pay Range: $108,000K - $155,000K.
