Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to develop, implement, monitor and maintain a comprehensive drug and alcohol abuse program.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
• Researches, develops, coordinates and implements inmate substance abuse counseling programs.
• Conducts intake interviews to assess inmate's need for treatment.
• Provides individual and group counseling to educate and assist inmates in recognizing and understanding the nature of the problem, to assess the need for treatment and to evaluate progress.
• Coordinates in-house meetings, activities and workshops to facilitate the recovery of inmates and to provide information regarding available services and programs.
• Develops and implements individualized treatment and recovery plans and recruits and oversees program volunteers.
• Confers with law enforcement agencies to determine inmate's legal status and develop appropriate discharge plans.
• Consults with representatives from community treatment programs and recovery facilities to determine the appropriate placement of inmates and to ensure continuity of care after release from custody.
• Prepares reports to document findings, recommendations and inmate progress; completes forms and maintains inmate records and charts according to established procedures, guidelines and legal requirements.
• Participates in case conferences with other health care professionals to discuss inmate care and progress.
• Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Associate's Degree in Counseling, Criminal Justice, Human or Social Services, Nursing or related discipline.
• Two (2) years of in-patient or inmate alcohol and drug counseling experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Must not have been convicted of a felony.
• Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
• Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.
• Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
• Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment.
• Must pass an annual tuberculin test.
• Applicants and employees in positions which perform job duties that may require contact with offenders in the custody or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice or with youth in the care, custody or supervision of Youth Development must meet qualifications pursuant to the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, 28 CFR 115.17 and 115.317, to include periodic post-employment criminal background checks.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
• Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
