Description
The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is offering an Established Scientist opportunity at JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The USAISR Genomics Research Core is dedicated to providing support for DNA and RNA sequencing and analysis. The methods utilized to quantify RNA transcripts, determine significance of differentially expressed genes, down and/or up regulate genes, and determine RNA concentration via quantitative polymerase chain reaction will be employed by the genomics core. Core lab will utilize statistical software to include but not be limited to: R Studio, Excel, GraphPad, and SAS to provide statistical support. Core laboratory will also include the service of tissue preparation, extraction of various types of RNA and/or DNA, and transcription of RNA into complimentary DNA for downstream analysis. Research will also facilitate the utilization of coding software to build programs capable of analyzing specific data sets.
What will I be doing?
As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to establish a standard practice for analyzing genomic data within a DoD environment.
Why should I apply?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:
- Analyzing genomic datasets, including data preprocessing, quality control, and data visualization
- Applying current trends and advancements in genomic data science, such as single-cell sequencing and metagenomics
- Using RStudio programming software
- Gaining experience analyzing and interpreting genomic data using bioinformatics tools and software.
- Developing proficiency in common genomic data analysis techniques, such as variant calling, gene expression, and pathway analysis
- Acquiring greater knowledge of the different types of genomic data and their sources, such as DNA sequencing, gene expression, and epigenetic data
Where will I be located?
San Antonio, Texas
What is the anticipated start date?
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
