SUMMARY

The Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer (VP/CNO) at Johns Hopkins Hospital is responsible for ensuring the delivery of optimal patient care through the coordination of nursing and patient care services, maintenance of quality assurance standards, and the appropriate allocation and management of nursing resources. The VP/CNO is also responsible for coordinating Regulatory Affairs and Patient and Guest Services and is an essential member of the executive team, reporting to the President of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and SVP Chief Nursing Officer of Johns Hopkins Health System.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Planning - Develops a specific course of action to achieve the defined objectives that create a positive image of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, meet strategic initiatives, and fulfill the hospital's mission.

  • Gathers, analyzes, and interprets data from internal and external sources to measure key changes in the clinical climate, market, consumer satisfaction, future needs of the nursing department, and organizational performance.
  • Participates in the formulation of hospital goals, objectives, and plans.

Departmental and Organizational Support - Establishes the structure and processes; assembles the resources required for executing plans.

  • Assembles and establishes resources that lead to the effective and economical accomplishment of business and clinical objectives.
  • Develops and maintains a governance structure with operating procedures and staffing to meet the needs of the organization.

Controlling - Measures, interprets, and evaluates actions and results for conformance to plans and policies.

  • Assures that standards of care and practice guide the provision of patient care services while providing direction for the nursing department consistent with professional practice and the hospital mission.
  • Advises senior management on compliance with The Nurse Practice Act and other regulatory requirements.
  • Develops and maintains a practice and organization manual for the Department of Nursing.

Climate Setting and Leadership - Ensures that the goals and actions of the organization are consistent with its values and mission.

  • Establishes timely and effective communication to ensure that all nursing and patient care services areas receive adequate information on internal and external items affecting their operations.
  • Co-leads Advanced Practice Providers with the Chief Medical Officer.

Operational/Technical - Relates to the specific operational responsibilities of the hospital.

  • Through quality assurance/performance improvement mechanisms, evaluates, develops, and maintains an institutional program for continuous quality service improvement.
  • Reviews and approves policies and procedures to ensure they support the highest achievable level of care.

Education & Experience

  • Earned doctorate in nursing or related field.
  • Master's degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Maryland or able to achieve.
  • Fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible nursing administration experience in an Academic Medical Center.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of nursing theory and practice, organizational management, finance, and administration.
  • Knowledge of the current healthcare environment.
  • Expert verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary for effective leadership and collaboration.
  • Negotiation skills necessary to resolve issues consistent with organizational objectives.
  • Ability to analyze data and synthesize information for problem solving and decision making.
