Position Summary

The AVP, Employee Relations will direct the Employee Relations Department of University Human Resources (inclusive of Adjunct Employee Relations). The AVP will be accountable for the provision of guidance, counsel, direction and best practice advice in regards to all labor and employee relations matters, including contract interpretation and negotiations, grievance and arbitration hearings and performance management. They will work closely with department/senior management to ensure that functional operations are in alignment with the principles of positive employee relations and in compliance with obligations under a collective bargaining agreement, law, policy or regulatory environment. The AVP ensures that all matters are investigated and handled in an equitable, consistent and lawful manner. The scope of responsibility includes global employee relations, HR investigatory oversight (in collaboration with OEO, Compliance Office, Internal Audit and Public Safety), as well as liaison for UHR on OER matters. This is a central HR position requiring extensive knowledge of policies, procedures, state and federal employment laws (CRA -Title VII, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, FLSA, PDA, USERRA, GINA, DFWA, OSHA, Title IX) and strong conflict management skills in a high volume environment.

Qualifications

Required Education: Master's degree in Human Resources Management, or related area or law degree.

Required Experience: 15+ years of HR experience with direct experience in handling employee relations, labor relations, labor statutes/regulations etc. Experience in managing labor unions also necessary.

Preferred Experience: Professional-level human resources experience as a human resources manager/director in an academic and union environment. Experience consulting with business leaders to develop human and organizational capacity in support of business strategies.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Demonstrated planning, analytical, negotiating, and interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. General business acumen including working knowledge of strategic planning. Extensive knowledge of human resources concepts, practices, legislation, and procedures, and their linkage to business strategy. Ability to develop and interpret policies and procedures, to interact effectively with a diverse population at all levels, and to facilitate decision making. Thorough knowledge of relevant federal, state and local employment and labor laws and regulations. Effective conflict resolution, facilitation and consultation skills.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Human Resources certification (SHRM or other accredited certificate program) and working knowledge of HRIS/ HRMS systems.
