Position Summary
For a limited time, the City of Rio Rancho is offering a $3,000.00 recruitment incentive for newly hired dispatchers thru November 30, 2024.
Hiring Incentive will be paid out in two equal installments.
The Dispatcher dispatches law enforcement, fire, rescue and support services units to emergency scenes. They provide information to emergency personnel and emergency medical pre-arrival information to the caller as required.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: None
Other requirements: Incumbents must be willing to work any days of the week (including weekends) and any hours of the day. Prior to applying, applicants must take & pass the city's standard typing test with results of 30 net WPM or greater in order to be considered for this position.

Driver's License requirement: Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.
Required certifications, licenses or registrations: State certified dispatcher
Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses: Must become a State certified dispatcher within one year.
Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: None
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Working knowledge of communications center equipment and software.
Skills: Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position (must test at or above 30 net WPM). Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Must have excellent verbal communications skills.
Abilities: Must be able to act calmly and promptly in stressful situations. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with the public. Must be willing to work irregular hours, holidays and overtime as necessary. Must have the ability to learn essential communications center equipment including the computer aided dispatch system, radio, fax machine, copy machine, phone system and other word processing software. Ability to learn the County's general geographic area. Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Must be able to multi-task.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with Department staff and supervisors to ensure quality customer service. Maintains harmonious, courteous, and professional relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. External: Works with other agencies throughout Sandoval County. Answers questions from the public or public officials. Presents a friendly courteous image for the City to the general public, visitors, and public officials. Works with vendors, contractors and other agency officials to resolve service issues in a courteous and efficient manner.
Essential Functions

  • Receive and record incoming calls and radio transmissions.
  • Dispatch emergency units in response to emergency calls for service.
  • Provide concise and accurate information to appropriate emergency units.
  • Maintain accurate records of the location and status of all field units.
  • Assist callers in emergency first aid as prescribed in state-recognized emergency medical dispatch procedures.
  • Access information systems such as National Crime Information Center, New Mexico and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System and local databases.
  • Provide emergency units with database information as requested.
  • Provide general information as requested by the public.
  • Perform general clerical duties as directed.
