Our Veterinary Assistants appraise and monitor the health of animals brought to the shelter and oversee their general veterinary care. The Veterinary Assistant will be responsible for taking blood, running lab tests, administering vaccinations, assisting with surgeries, and euthanizing animals when necessary. This position also has responsibility for helping with ordering, inventorying and controlling medical supplies and related controlled substances.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Animal Care
- Monitor and manage animal health on an on-going basis; provide treatment and follow-up care as needed.
- Assist with rescue work of animals; assess and treat animals as ne
- Assist with surgeries; take blood samples and run lab tests; administer vaccinations.
- Assist in carrying out decisions to euthanize animals.
- Assist with transfer of animals to foster care.
- Order medical supplies as needed; oversee medical supply inventory; conduct monthly supply inventory.
- Manage and secure controlled substances used by the facility for animal health.
- Account for and document use of all controlled substances.
- Follow and enforce SFAHS safety procedures.
- Maintain MSDS information as needed.
- Provide assistance and direction to staff with animal care
- Provide assistance and service to customers; answer medical questions
Perform other functions as directed and as able
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Work Experience
- No formal education is required.
- However, similar previous work environments and related field of study is helpful.
- Must be able to work well and handle all types of animals.
- Must have good communication skills with people, both verbal and written; must be able to deal professionally and tactfully with customers and staff at all times.
- Must have strong computer and math skills; able to work with microscope and medical testing equipment.
- Must have and maintain valid driver's license with good driving record.
- A high degree of working with animals, veterinary supplies and medicines is required.
- Generally light to medium work - regularly exerting up to 30 pounds of force to lift or move objects.
- Moderate amounts of walking, standing, kneeling, lifting, feeling, talking and hearing, and minor amounts of balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping and repetitive motions are required.
- Must have a reasonable amount of visual acuity to make general observations and inspection of animals.
- Mostly inside work; some outside work and temperature changes involved; some noise and odors from animals.

COMPENSATION: Starting at $16/Hour DOE
