About us

National Energy System Operator (NESO) has a key role to play in tackling climate change by transitioning GB's electricity system to net zero. We are also providing advice to the Government on achieving a decarbonised power system by 2030.

NESO recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain's energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Job Purpose

Have you ever wondered how we keep the electricity flowing and the lights on for all electricity consumers in Great Britain? If so, joining our 18-month Graduate Development Programme gives you the opportunity to develop your skills in a key role in this by joining the National Energy System Operator (NESO) as a Graduate Power System Engineer and be part of the core team that is working to operate a carbon free electricity system by 2035.

As a Graduate Power System Engineer, you will be contributing to developing the future energy system. Depending on the requirements of the team you are working alongside, opportunities may include creating, developing and informing our understanding of future challenges, looking at potential solutions in technical, economic and market fronts.

You'll be involved in activities responsible for the identification and mitigation of operability risk in an economic and efficient manner in strategic timescales - supporting analysis and development of the necessary codes/control strategies required, and will also be supporting the department activity of publishing the technical and economic findings in various publications aimed at industry, and regulator and supporting strategic follow-up to develop whole system solutions which address the issues identified.

Our Graduate Programme

Depending on which of the exciting and important teams you are a key part of you may, amongst other things, be:

  1. Preparing and undertaking power system analysis to identify network issues and solutions for the development of the network
  2. Developing system operability strategies and new ancillary products, based on system analysis and on plant specific information, whilst taking into account the operation of the system, generation and demand
  3. Working with GB transmission owners to ensure our network simulation models are maintained to provide accurate and technical analysis necessary to electricity network design
  4. Manage the technical aspects of electricity frameworks (both GB and Europe)
  5. Contributing to the development of analysis and content for NESO publications
  6. Facilitating new generation and demand connections to the GB network
  7. Assessing Grid Code compliance of GB network users and identifying remedial actions
  8. Undertaking strategic energy planning analysis to support strategic network development
  9. Working with internal and external stakeholders and building trusting relationships

This role is based at Warwick hybrid working options available and dependent upon business requirement.

You will demonstrate understanding of the fundamentals of energy system operation and have skills and experience in using programming languages and operational research techniques that will allow a step change in the type and level of analysis we complete. A good level of ability in producing written reports and presentations as well as analysis and design would be beneficial.

You will have a minimum 2.2 degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering, or Physics, or Maths, or Data Science.

Ideally, you will also have a valid full UK Driving Licence.
