Position Purpose: The Food Service Aide plays an important role in maintaining the mission of JWCH by accepting and serving daily meals and snacks, adhering to our goal of enhancing the health and well-being of underserved populations in Los Angeles County through direct healthcare provision, education, services, and research. The Food Service Worker is responsible for preparing, serving, and maintaining food services for residents of the interim housing program. This role involves ensuring that meals are nutritious, safe, and served in a timely and respectful manner. The Food Service Worker will also assist in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and dining areas, following all health and safety regulations.
Program Population: The Downtown DTLA Hotel is an Interim Housing Program that helps homeless individuals in their recovery journey, helping them improve their health conditions and enhance their social and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) skills, all with the focus of securing stable housing opportunities. Some of these individuals may also experience mental health and substance abuse issues, which can occasionally result in behaviors such as yelling, using strong language, and displaying anger outbursts. The core responsibility of each staff member at the DTLA Hotel is to support clients in overcoming obstacles and improving their coping mechanisms.

- Assist in the preparation of meals according to established menus and dietary guidelines.
- Serve meals to residents in a timely and courteous manner.
- Ensure portion control and proper food presentation.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and dining areas.
- Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
- Dispose of garbage and recycling appropriately.
- Follow all health and safety regulations, including proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures.
- Monitor food temperatures and quality to ensure safety and compliance.
- Report any health or safety concerns to the Food Service Supervisor or Program Manager.
- Assist in the inventory management of food and kitchen supplies.
- Notify the Food Service Supervisor of any shortages or needed supplies.
- Ensure proper storage and labeling of food items.
- Interact with residents in a friendly and respectful manner.
- Address any dietary needs or concerns, and report them to the appropriate staff.
- Provide assistance to residents as needed during meal times.
- Work collaboratively with other kitchen and program staff to ensure efficient food service operations.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
- Assist in special events or activities related to food service.
- Clean kitchenettes and dining areas, emptying trash cans in preparation for meal service.
- Check expiration dates on milk and using the oldest cartons first, inspecting the temperature of hot and cold foods upon arrival.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in food service, kitchen, or cafeteria settings
- Experience working in a community or social services setting is a plus.
- Knowledge of basic food preparation and kitchen safety.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.
- Food Handler's certification or willingness to obtain one.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks and handle kitchen equipment safely.
