This is a technical position including but not limited to traffic signals, on-site repair of electronic devices, computer-based signal systems, roadway/sign lighting and all Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Devices throughout Division 14. This position is also responsible for diagnosis and correction of problems with state traffic control equipment and hardware/software which includes over 500 traffic signals and flashers. Also is responsible for programming signals in fiber optic, isolated and wireless radio (ENCOM) closed loop signal systems. Position must be able to provide training and technical support for Electronics Technician I’s in the Department. Position must be able to maintain written and computer-based records, communicate effectively both orally and in writing with contractors, co-workers, and the general public, and assist with developing and administering all annual construction contracts, purchase order contracts and division contracts. Must have the ability to use standard computer programs, work effectively with other employees, operate a bucket truck to respond to after-hours signal and incident management emergencies immediately and is required to be on call rotation for 24/7 response. Must have the ability to work outside for extended periods in variable weather conditions on uneven terrain, perform site reviews, inspections and coordinate required utility adjustments. This position may manage/supervise traffic signal technicians in proper traffic signal maintenance, installations, and repair; and assign daily tasks and work schedules as directed.Safety toe shoes required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:Experience in the use of standard test equipment used to diagnose & repair electronic components.Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the installation, revision, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic traffic control systems.Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision.Experience in applying the principles in the MUTCD, NC DOT Standard Specifications, NC DOT Roadway Drawings and the National Electric Code.Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsSome state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
