Code Inspector


The City of Alexandria is in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. Overview
Schedules and conducts witnessed inspections and tests of new and existing fire protection systems to ensure compliance with approved plans and installation documents;
  1. Administers and enforces all adopted State and local codes, ordinances, and standards related to life safety and property protection;
  2. Investigates and troubleshoots problems related to fire protection systems equipment and related systems;
  3. Prepares documentation related to outcome of inspections and tests;
  4. Serves Compliance Request, Notice of Violation, stop work orders, and Virginia Uniform Summons related to building, fire prevention, and property maintenance issues;
  5. Investigates complaints related to fire protection systems, property maintenance, and building and fire code issues;
  6. Reviews new and existing building conditions in relation to available plans, technical specifications, engineering reports, and shop drawings;
  7. Establishes follow-up protocol to ensure compliance requests and notice of violations are resolved in a timely and appropriate manner;
  8. Responds to emergency incidents as needed to provide guidance, technical support, and assist with mitigation of fire protection system related issues as well as other fire prevention and building construction and occupancy issues for citizens, fire operations, code administration, and other City agencies;
  9. Operates office equipment (computers / printers), communication devices (cell phones, radios, pagers), and motor vehicles;
  10. Obtains and maintains technical certifications and continuing education related to fire protection systems, property maintenance, and building construction;
  11. Manages and schedules daily workload;
  12. Takes requests by phone for specific inspection times;
  13. Takes calls and answers questions from owners & contractors about a variety of code issues;
  14. Assists other inspectors with code or procedure issues;
  15. Assists other agencies, departments, authorities with inspection requirements, investigations, etc.;
  16. Responds to formal complaints and takes required action to resolve issues;
  17. Works with plan review staff to resolve current and avoid future problems in the field;
  18. Maintains equipment and computers;
  19. Performs related work as required.
About the Department
The Alexandria Fire Department provides fire and emergency medical services with capabilities for responding to a wide range of occurrences, including fire protection to a 15 square mile city. We employ more than 300 professionals, which include firefighters, paramedics, fire prevention staff, and administrative support. A network of ten stations protects 15 square miles. Among the department's specialized teams are the Northern Virginia Regional Hazardous Materials Team, Technical Rescue, Marine Operations, Special Operations Team, and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM).
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent and five years of work experience in the private or public sector involving the design, installation, repair, maintenance, inspection, testing, and/or code enforcement of fire protection systems or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Certifications: (Must be obtained within 12 months of hire):
Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Code Inspector III; Virginia Fire Inspector Certification (National Fire Protection Association 1031 Certification); Virginia Certification in Fire Protection 3B - General and Fire Protection (Building Officials and Code Administrators Association); Virginia Fire Protection - Plans Review Certification (Building Officials and Code Administrators Association); Virginia Fire Protection - General Certification (DHCD).

Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to driving record check, previous education and employment verification, and criminal background check.
