Description
The Dental Assistant I position at the SIUE School of Dental Medicine represents a vital role within the dental care team, responsible for assisting dental students, faculty, and residents in providing comprehensive patient care. Key responsibilities include the preparation of patients for dental treatments, providing chairside assistance during procedures, ensuring the sterilization of dental instruments, and maintaining accurate patient records, all while adhering to strict safety protocols. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Thoroughly clean and sterilize all items necessary for patient treatment.
  • Organize procedure tray set-ups needed for each clinical session.
  • Prepare, verify, and return individual treatment trays for each patient.
  • Ensure proper disposal of needles and anesthetic carpules.
  • Stock dental operatories with required disposable supplies.
  • Manage clean linen inventory.
  • Keep track of equipment borrowed by faculty and students.
  • Perform daily inspections to check operatories for any unreturned instruments, materials, or equipment. Alert the supervisor promptly about any missing items.
  • Provide additional instruments and materials upon request during the day.
  • Provide students with necessary materials and equipment for clinical sessions.
  • Each year, support in getting ready for mock and regional boards.
  • Aid in managing the intake and return of cases to and from external dental labs.
  • Contribute to creating and updating inventory logs.
  • Conduct regular spore testing on autoclaves and keep up-to-date performance records for technical services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: This position is full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to perform functions of administrative and clerical procedures managing files and records, designing forms, and managing inventory.
  • Knowledge of computers to input data, access information, and/or create materials and documents using a variety of software applications.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Skill in interpersonal verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to build rapport with patients.
  • Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Ability to remain continuously on task for several hours while sitting, standing, or moving.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, confidentiality, and respect when speaking with patients, peers, faculty, and staff.
