The 3 to 5 School Counselor will work to advance a shared understanding of the diverse, ever-changing, and complex social and emotional needs of the Lawrence school community. The School Counselor will lead whole-class SEL lessons, participate in and facilitate therapeutic groups, work with students individually, and serve as a liaison for families/caregivers, community stakeholders, teachers, and other staff to best meet the needs of the student body.
The Counselor will work primarily with students in grades 3-5 and will also work in conjunction with the school counselors for grades K to 2 and 6-8, the school adjustment counselor/social worker, the school psychologist, the school nurse, classroom teachers, and school-based administrators.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Consult with staff about student needs
- Schedule intake meetings for newly enrolled students
- Collaborates with parents to build partnerships that support school work, behavior, attendance, and student investment.
- Serves as liaison between the school and outside agencies and clinicians as needed to support students
- Acts as a link between home, school, and staff to address issues affecting students and help students maximize their learning potential and cope with these issues.
- Serve as a 504 coordinator for students in grades 3 to 5
- Helps families make appropriate social agency contacts as needed
- Assists individual students directly with adjustment to school
- Participates with other members of the clinical team in case conferences and regular staff meetings
- Provides individual, group, and crisis counseling to students as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal or district administration.
- Leads whole-class SEL lessons
- Leads small-group therapeutic interventions.
- Provides individual counseling.
- Mass DESE Guidance Counselor or School Social Worker/Adjustment Counselor certification
