Position Overview
The Montgomery County Public Defender Office is now accepting applications for the position of Social Work Manager. Our office is made up of attorneys, social workers, investigators, client engagement staff, administrative assistants, and a paralegal. We handle every aspect of indigent criminal defense across juvenile, misdemeanor, felony, and appellate divisions. Our office is committed to seeking and sustaining a culturally diverse staff with expertise and interest in serving our indigent clientele who come to us with diverse needs, backgrounds, ethnicities, and abilities to yield better results for our clients and our office.
We are seeking a self-motivated individual to lead the Social Work Division. The ideal candidate should have strong leadership skills, be self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills, have a good understanding of the criminal legal system in Montgomery County, have demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate with key stakeholders and partners, have a demonstrated dedication to indigent defense, and should have experience leading teams that serve clients experiencing homelessness, severe and persistent mental illness, alcohol and drug addiction, and behavioral concerns.
Summary of Job Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Manage day-to-day operations, staff needs, intern needs, and client needs of Social Work Team
  • Provide and ensure relevant training for staff; provide training supervision to Master's level social workers
  • Engage and collaborate with stakeholders in the criminal legal, treatment, housing, and mental health systems to advocate for client needs
  • Represent office and client interests on advisory boards and work groups related to improving the criminal legal system and/or outcomes for clients
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of new office programs and initiatives related to holistic defense
  • Assist with social work client cases as needed, with particular attention to high-profile cases, cases involving competency/sanity, and Capital Murder cases
  • Collaborate with over division managers to ensure effectiveness of the multidisciplinary team and improved outcomes for clients
  • Perform all other assignments as assigned by the Public Defender.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
Master's Degree in Social Work & Independent Social Work Licensure (LISW-S preferred). Leadership experience, with additional experience related to program development and implementation. Knowledge of the criminal legal system, housing/homelessness system, mental health and substance use treatment system in Montgomery County is required. Knowledge of court proceedings is required. A valid driver's license and ability to transport clients is also required.

Part-time Employees (Non-Benefits Eligible) (20 hours or less per week): Benefits include Long Term Sick Leave Accrual, Paid Personal Leave, and holiday pay for hours scheduled to work on holidays.
Seasonal Employees: Benefits include Sick Leave accrued at 4.6 hours for every eighty 80 hours in active
pay status. Seasonal employees scheduled to work 40 hours during their period of employment will accrue vacation in the same manner as regular full-time employees and can use their vacation after completion of twenty-six (26) bi-weekly pay periods in active pay status. Part-time Seasonal employees (scheduled to work less than 40 hours) do not accrue vacation.
Intermittent and Temporary Employees: Long-Term Sick Leave accrual is based on hours worked.
