Function / Position Summary
Receive new families to the district and provide orientation related to the instructional services of school district U-46 as well as information about community resources. Coordinate the identification, assessment, and placement of new students with non-English background. Make home visits when needed. Practice in community events and meetings to maintain an open communication network. Served as an advocate for students and parents when necessary. Provide support/refer social services for special circumstances. Disseminate information within the community about services offered by the Family welcome Center and by School district U-46. Travel throughout the district for testing of new, non-English background students is required.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Assess the English language proficiency of new students with a second language background and make placement recommendations, including all incoming kindergarten students with a non-English background.
  • Monitor the screening at the middle and high school levels to ensure that all new students and returning students with a second language background are tested and recommended to the correct program.
  • Establish ongoing communication with school-level staff regard to placement qualification, and enrollment status of new students with a second language background.
  • Collaborate with school level staff to promote students' academic, social, and emotional development.
  • Familiarized family members with services available in schools and the community.
  • Responsible for the Kindergarten testing schedule at all Pre-K sites and all elementary schools.
  • Responsible for the accuracy of data entry and test scores of all new kindergarten students as well as all elementary students with a second language background.
  • Keep schools informed about the students who qualify, accept, or refuse the ELL program.
  • Provide support to educators, students, and families with school enrollment, information, and obtaining educational services.
  • Provide information regarding the registration process of new students in the district when possible.
  • Provide families with educational and community-based resources guides.
  • Provide training, resources, and curriculum materials for ELL/ESL and multicultural education.
  • Ensure ELL folder for qualifying students are created and all students' evaluation folders are distributed to the corresponding buildings in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain open communication with special education department to ensure that children with special needs are placed in the correct program in a timely manner.
  • Provide ACCESS training to all new teachers/administrators in the district.
  • Provide WIDA-MODEL, W-APT training to teachers when necessary.
  • Establish ongoing communication with assessment office and ELL department.
  • Continuously review the FWC procedures to better support schools, other departments, and to asses and place students more effectively.
  • Coordinate Plazas Comunitarias.
  • Support the initiatives of the ELL department as deemed necessary by the Director of English Language Learners.
Education
  • Professional Educator License (PEL) with General Administrative or Principal endorsement required.
  • Professional Educator License (PEL) with Bilingual and ESL endorsement.
  • Performance Evaluation Qualifications (Teacher) required.
  • Bilingual, Spanish/English written and verbal(preferred).
Experience / Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the ELL program/second language acquisition.
  • Background in assessment/evaluation (preferred).
Physical Demands
  • Ability to move materials up to 30lbs. (with proper technique) between sites.
Terms of Employment
  • This is a 12-month position. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.
Salary Information
  • The full salary range for this position is $100,716.00 - $151,055.00. It is our typical practice to hire in between the minimum and midpoint ($125,000.00)
