Department Summary

Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Platform Services enables hybrid cloud for computing, storage, and services environments with a mix of on-premises infrastructure, private cloud services, and public cloud. This team creates seamless orchestration across various platforms to enable agility, scalability, reliability, and lower infrastructure costs. This allows for applications and components to interoperate across boundaries improving developer productivity as well as regulatory compliance and security. Platform Services oversees provisioning, hosting, and administration of physical and virtual servers and related storage.

Position Summary

The Systems Engineer will provide advanced level system administration services for the mainframe z/OS operating system. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the mainframe and other platform systems are available, reliable, performing optimally, and are cost effective in support of UCLA's computing requirements. They will lead improvements of the environment by replacing legacy processes and taking advantage of new technology as appropriate, such as Windows and/or Linux. Additionally, they will address advanced technical problems promptly to resolution.

The Systems Engineer will collaborate with other groups in the implementation of cross-platform (mainframe and distributed/open systems) applications. They will support the migration of UCLA's data and information from a mainframe environment to a cloud-based environment, reducing the university's overall on-prem footprint and will execute against UCLA's business continuity and disaster recovery initiatives. The Systems Engineer will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.

Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications
  • Five years experience working in one or more of the following fields: systems programming, information technology or network operations, or a related field. (Required)
  • Proven advanced experience as a Systems Programmer or Engineer with specialization in various operating platform environments, such as z/OS mainframe, Windows, Linux, and/or other operating systems. (Required)
  • Significant experience in programming languages and scripting relevant operating systems such as z/OS, Windows, Linux, and/or other operating systems such as JCL, REXX, and Assembler. (Required)
  • Seven or more years experience working in one or more of the following fields: systems programming, information technology or network operations. (Preferred)
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred)
  • Advanced expertise in operating system management, configurations, and performance tuning, such as z/OS, Windows, Linux, and/or other operating systems. (Required)
  • Knowledge of z/OS program products, utilities, and subsystems. (Required)
  • Strong familiarity with security practices and protocols for operating platforms such as z/OS mainframe, Windows, Linux, and/or other operating system environments. (Required)
  • Significantly demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and manage operating systems such as z/OS, Windows, Linux, and/or others. (Required)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate complex technical ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. Can relay technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders. (Required)

  • Bachelor's Degree in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience/training. (Required)

Special Conditions for Employment
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes regular visits to campus as needed (for those who work remotely, travel/lodging expenses are not eligible for reimbursement).
  • The anticipated pay range for this position is $130,500 - $145,000, annually; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.
