Job Summary : This position is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the Moreau Center for Service & Justice (MCSJ) as an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs. Guided by Catholic Social Teaching, the MCSJ partners with local and global communities to engage in critical human and environmental concerns, supporting active learning and mutually beneficial service opportunities to enhance experience-based leadership development. The Director oversees the fulfillment of the University’s core themes related to formation, service, and justice, ensuring University students are provided opportunities to connect meaningfully through community engagement that fosters a deepened understanding of the needs of the world and its human family. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Core Duties

  • Advance the mission and vision of the University through service, leadership, a variety of programs and operations while serving as an active collaborator with the Office of Campus Ministry, Special Assistant to the President for Mission, and other campus leaders to drive inclusive excellence.
  • Provide vision and leadership to the development and implementation of MCSJ programs, informed by Catholic social teaching that supports the dignity and experience for community partners while achieving University and MCSJ strategic goals.
  • Develop community partnerships and actively seek opportunities for academic collaboration to meet community-driven needs and foster efforts to serve the Portland area.
  • Analyze program effectiveness and assess outcomes, making strategic recommendations as needed with the intent to expand opportunities for high impact community engagement and leadership experiences for students.
  • Lead the MCSJ annual assessment process in alignment with the Division of Student Affairs and all University reporting requirements.
  • Oversee and implement policies and procedures that support equitable practices and ensure risk management around programming and immersions.
  • Supervise and support the MCSJ Program Managers and other staff & student employees, overseeing volunteer and student leader positions. Supervisory responsibilities include hiring processes, setting expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes including termination of employment.
  • Manage budget process, tracking, and reporting of MCSJ expenditures as well as projecting funding needs. Participate in measures to strengthen financial support for MCSJ such as grants, donor engagement, and fundraising efforts.
  • Direct and oversee all promotional and communications materials for the Center, including the department’s website, brochures, social media, and Moreau Center entries in various other campus publications.
  • Support and collaborate with University partners to plan and promote projects and events, such as MLK Day-On and Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach.
  • Participate as a lead accompanier for at least one immersion trip per academic year.
  • Provide advisory support to student clubs.
  • Represent the department in various University programs, professional networks, and external events as needed.
  • Serve on University Committees for strategic initiatives.

Education & Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of study.
  • Required: Five or more years’ experience in higher education administration and/or non-profit management with an understanding of community-based and/or government agencies.
  • Preferred: Masters, PhD or EdD, or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

  • Knowledge of successful academic and administrative program development and management.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and fiscal responsibilities with revenue building measures inclusive of grant writing.
  • Ability to create new and ongoing partnerships with external entities and colleagues across a variety of divisions, departments, and disciplines.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national trends, issues, organizations, opportunities, and resources pertaining to community-based learning (CBL) and place-based community engagement.
  • Alignment with the Catholic mission of the University of Portland and the ability to articulate this mission to others.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct workshops and programming presentations.
  • Ability to consistently handle and follow through with multiple projects and assignments and meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements

  • As needed: ability to travel by car and airplane (locally, domestically, and internationally).
  • As needed: ability to work irregular hours such as early mornings, evenings, nights, overnight hours, weekends, and holidays as necessitated by duties of the position.
