Job Requirements / Description

NUtech Ventures is a University of Nebraska affiliate that facilitates the transfer of university innovations from the lab to the marketplace. NUtech Ventures is seeking a highly motivated professional to serve as a Technology Manager on its Licensing team. This position is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and managing invention disclosures, developing licensing strategies, interacting with University researchers, and successfully commercializing University IP. Candidates should have a deep knowledge of technology transfer and the ability to maintain productive relationships with university inventors and industry representatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a substantial portfolio of intellectual property, screening invention disclosures and assessing their commercial potential.
  • Work extensively with University researchers to identify technologies/inventions with commercial potential in a field specific to the individual’s technical background.
  • Develop marketing strategies and identify potential licenses and contacts within the company to commercialize the inventions.
  • Perform licensing responsibilities – negotiate and draft appropriate technology access agreements (e.g. term sheets, license agreements, option agreements, biological material agreements, etc.).
  • Develop and manage strong relationships with University researchers and industry partners to build a pipeline of innovative technologies and business development opportunities.
  • Perform, manage, and participate in the outreach efforts of NUtech to help university researchers understand the disclosure and commercialization process, the role of NUtech Ventures, and commercialization-related policies of the University of Nebraska.
  • Formulate patent strategies with the NUtech IP team to secure protection for University intellectual property (patents, trademarks, copyright).
  • Assist NUtech’s Entrepreneurship team in their efforts to develop and support UNL’s entrepreneurial culture.
  • Assist NUtech compliance manager with monitoring licensee compliance and performance.
  • Help manage and direct a team of student interns and technology commercialization fellows with tasks related to technology assessment and commercialization activities.
  • Work with the Sponsored Research and Industry Relations office on IP aspects of the research and/or collaboration agreements.
  • Work as an integral part of a team contributing to the ongoing evolution of NUtech Ventures in its mission of commercializing University intellectual property and enhancing the economic development of Nebraska.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Creativity, self-motivation, and the use of data to make decisions are NUtech’s strategic anchors. The Technology Manager must be able to conceive, lead, and accomplish goals and tasks independently. The ability to make decisions with available and sometimes limited information and then clearly communicate those decisions to innovators in a timely manner is critical to success. The Technology Manager must be able to manage a variety of complex projects concurrently in a sometimes ambiguous and rapidly changing business environment. Strong communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work on a team (not just a working group) are essential. Technology Managers have the opportunity to work in a flexible team-based environment, with many opportunities for travel and professional development.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a Physical or Life Sciences field (e.g., Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, or Molecular Biology), or another STEM field.
  • One (1) year of experience in technology transfer or equivalent.
  • Proficient in understanding Physical Sciences or other STEM field-related inventions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a field of Physical or Life Sciences.
  • Working knowledge of Patents and intellectual property.
  • Three (3) or more years of direct experience in technology commercialization, technology management, business development, and licensing.
  • Knowledge of technology transfer and laws/regulations related to technology transfer in industry and academia.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate with university researchers and industry partners.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
