The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Safety and Health Specialist.

Develops and conducts safety and occupational health training and education programs, inspects and evaluates workplace environments to ensure they comply with local, state and federal regulations and recommends measures to protect workers and the general public from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials. Conducts indoor air quality assessments in order to determine the best actions for maintaining indoor air quality in buildings or other areas where employees assemble and work. Assesses County facilities by the use of inspections and the use of instrumentation in order to audit, process, and/or collect statistical data to identify trends, evaluate conditions and recommend appropriate corrective action.

Investigates and analyzes accidents to identify root cause and recommend corrective actions by utilizing occupational safety and health standards and regulations for guidance and reference and while using the County's current safety manual.

Reviews, develops and implements occupational health and safety policies and related compliance programs; assists with various Safety and Occupational Programs; assists in industrial hygiene monitoring; oversees and coordinates Broward County's Occupational Vaccine Program.

Conducts ergonomic assessments to improve productivity, quality and safety and worker comfort by making practical ergonomic improvements in the workplace; conducts job hazard analysis to identify hazards and recommend steps to eliminate or reduce hazards to an acceptable risk level.

Supervises the everyday evolution of performing local criminal background checks for new hires and volunteers, tracks employees’ driver's licenses and citizen complaints regarding employee driving habits. Receives loss notices regarding vehicle accidents throughout the month; enters accident information; acquires any additional information required to bring to the accident review committee for their review and vote. Reviews and collects data for inclusion into the County's Risk Management Information System (RMIS) for statistical analysis and study in order to compile and form proactive actions, plans or programs.

Attends staff meetings, committee meetings, prepares for accident review committee meetings.

Performs related work as assigned.

General Description

Promotes, develops and manages the safety and occupational health of the employees of Broward County. Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in biology, chemistry, health sciences, engineering or closely related field. Requires two (2) years anticipating, identifying, evaluating chemical, physical and biological hazards and performing instructional design and adult learning delivery related to environmental health and safety and/or criminal background & investigative services experience including one (1) year of lead work/supervisory experience, depending on area of assignment.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License for duration of appointment.

  • First Aid CPR/AED/Blood Borne Pathogen Instructor and/or Basic and/or Advanced Life Support
  • Fork Lift/Aerial Lift Instructor
  • OSHA Hazardous Materials Coursework
  • Building Inspections
  • Security and/or Loss Control

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
